Debating and sharing ideas: the essence of Harkness. More…
I love studying history at Exeter. The discussions you have are quality. You discuss not only what happened but also the major factors influencing the time. You learn to debate and share ideas. You develop ideas of your own. Just focusing on dates can be a real turnoff. We discuss actual people, their motives, why they did what they did. This helps history come off the page and come alive.
My History teacher, Ms. Merrill, is very energetic. She took this class when she was an Exeter student. Now that it’s the end of our prep year, we all know each other pretty well. We have a very dynamic class. The boy I'm working with – Alden – was in my Greek history class too. We reenacted the Battle of Marathon on the Academy lawn – that was great.
History and Latin are my two favorite subjects. Latin because teachers weave so much of Roman history into it. And History because it’s the best class for the Harkness method.
