RELIGION
A firm believer in independent thinking who cultivates imagination and integrity in his students.
B.A. Hamilton College; M. Div. Yale Divinity School. Appointed 1990, 1998.

On Harkness teaching:  "Exeter is a place where independence matters. Whether that means thinking independently at the Harkness table or living with a measure of independence in the dorm, this independence involves both freedom and responsibility. I see my work with students at Exeter as encouraging independence in this rich and complicated sense."

Favorite lesson:  "Those 'aha!' moments when we see the way a text works and what it means are, simply, the best. I particularly enjoy working with students as we come to terms with a text, whether it is the New Testament, the Ramayana, or The Color Purple.  We bring our expertise, imagination and insight to the common goal of understanding a sacred scripture or work of contemporary literature that explores and reveals religious experience."

Why Exeter:  "I love teaching here because the resources and structures of Academy life encourage independence. Students are highly motivated, the classroom is built around focused exchange of ideas, and extra-curricular life is varied and open. Teaching at Exeter becomes a way of living. There is a seamlessness about life at Exeter that challenges each of us to live with integrity."

Other Hats:  "I teach religion, but I am also a dormitory head, club adviser, club sport coach, father of an Academy graduate and husband."

Passions:  "I love golf, movies, yoga, art museums, local beaches, music and New York City!"
