For this fieldtrip, I got up at about 6:45; the bus left shortly after 7. Here, my classmate Chandler and I are digging in the mud looking for worms to get specimens that we can bring back to a tank in the science building. We talk about them and look at them under the microscope. I think it’s a lot of fun; it’s very hands-on. Our teacher, Dr. Goddard, hands out tools and we try to get as many different types of worms as we can. We probably got five or six different kinds of worms. Dr. Goddard brings us breakfast. She brought us scones and bananas!

At one point we were looking for lugworms, which live about a foot down in the bottom sediment. They are short and pretty fat. We were looking for piles of their excrement because that usually shows you where they are. Taylor, Dr. Goddard, and Domini were using the net to see what they could get, and I think they got some shrimp and a few little fish. The trip is usually quite fun—you feel quite accomplished because you’ve actually gotten something done that morning rather than sleeping. To me, it’s really interesting to see the things we read about in class.

10:25 AM: Arabic –

Time for a fourth language. More…

My friend Jenna and I take Arabic together. It’s the first year they offered Arabic. I speak English, Chinese, and French. I wanted to continue with languages, and Arabic is completely different from all the other languages I speak. My teacher, Mr. Jebari, helps us learn a new language and a new culture at the same time. What we do in class depends on a number of things, but now we are working through the textbook, which comes with a DVD that’s about a girl who goes to NYU and studies English literature. The book is structured so that you learn words and then you can use them in your speech.

A fresh look at classic literature. More…

This term we’ve read three books and some short stories by James Joyce. I like Paradise Lost a lot – the ideas and the language. People just don’t write like that anymore. For our projects, we mostly write papers. They may be analytical papers about the book, or they could be personal essays totally unrelated to the coursework. The book is primarily used for class discussion, where we discuss the reading from the night before. I enjoy literature and I know Mr. Terry really likes it too.

1:30 PM: Squash –

This is club squash, but I’m also on varsity squash in the winter. I’m waiting for a court with Katie and Maria, who are also in the club. I play with Coach Randall from time to time, but I also play with the other team members. I’ve been playing for about five or six years. We meet four times a week for club and six times a week for varsity. We usually have games on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The new courts opened last winter. They are really nice because they’re quieter and higher quality, and there are a lot more of them. Now we have 13 international size courts, as opposed to three. More people come to watch because there is more space for spectators.

3:50 PM: Chamber orchestra –

I’ve played the cello for six years. I’m in Symphony too, but Chamber is more intimate because there are fewer players. We performed at the Holiday Concert, so we spent the whole fall preparing for that. It was in the gym, and I think we performed well. Here we’re practicing Mozart’s Symphony Number 40. We rehearse three times a week for about 50 minutes all year long. It was really fun this term.

I’m working on a project for my Capital and Its Critics class with Jackie, Scott, and Poon. It was about China’s economy. We met pretty frequently because it was for the final. We had to turn in a project and give a 15-minute presentation. We read a lot of newspaper articles about China so we’re pretty up-to-date on current events. I think we got an ‘A’ on the report!

My sister Libby is helping me with homework, along with our friends Katelin, Michelle, and Andrea. Libby’s a prep and we requested to be in the same dorm. It’s nice because she and I went to different schools in Hong Kong. We hang out a lot, and she’s on Varsity Squash too. We’re looking at my music and playing music. I mostly listen to classical. The poster on my wall is of different sea creatures in Hong Kong. Ms. Clarke is one of the dorm faculty, and she’s checking us in.
