Exeter Alums Marching to the Madness

"March Madness" will hit cities across the country this week as 64 NCAA Men's Division I basketball teams set their sights on the 2008 National Championship. While the nets will be cut down in San Antonio on April 7,  there's plenty of hoop interest brewing on the Phillips Exeter campus these days. For the first time in school history, Phillips Exeter will be represented by three former basketball players in the NCAA Tournament. Dan Nelms, Joe Duffy and Josh Owens will be competing with their respective teams when the tournament tips off this weekend; but within the past two years, they went to battle on the hardwood donning an Exeter uniform. Here's a look at each player.

DAN NELMS, PEA '06, is a 6'9" center for # 10 seed Davidson College. Davidson holds the nation's longest win streak at 22 consecutive games, including the Southern Conference Championship win a week ago. Davidson will meet #7 Gonzaga in the first round of the tournament. With an upset, Nelms and his Davidson teammates would likely meet Georgetown for a chance to reach the Sweet Sixteen. Nelms excelled in both basketball and soccer during his postgraduate year at Phillips Exeter.

JOE DUFFY, PEA '07, is a 6'8" forward for #4 seed Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt recently defeated the University of Tennessee, knocking them out of their #1 national ranking. Duffy and his teammates will face #13 Siena in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Tampa, FL. During his postgraduate year at Phillips Exeter, Duffy played center, averaging fifteen points and nine rebounds per game.

JOSH OWENS, PEA '07, is a 6'9" forward for #3 seed Stanford University. Stanford will face #14 Cornell in the opening round of the tournament. Stanford has held a top ten national ranking for several weeks as they enter the tournament. Owens, who was ranked one of the top 150 forwards nationally while at Phillips Exeter, served as a two year captain and teamed up with Nelms as a junior and Duffy during his senior year.
