Girls and boys eight at Harsha Lake with Keith Hereford (l), boathouse manager, and Sally Morris (r), crew coach

Exeter’s girls and boys first boats headed to Harsha Lake, outside Cincinnati, last Thursday to race against competitors from across the country in the 2008 USRowing Youth Championships. Their upbeat spirit led them to one bronze, and a wonderful trip. See photos from the Championships

Sally Morris, girls crew coach, accompanied the teams to Harsha Lake. "We had a fantastic trip," she said upon returning to Exeter. "I could not have asked for a more delightful group to travel together. The team talked about how unified they felt as a program with the boys and girls training for the same goal together, and how much they learned from each other. Focused, polite, friendly, and looking for ways to be faster rowers, they all had the same goal in mind and supported each other along the way."

The girls eight, rowing the M. Catherine Gilmartin, placed third in the grand final with a time of 6:37:39 (six minutes, 37.39 seconds). First place went to Marin Rowing Association (06:33:66), second place to Los Gatos Rowing Club (06:36:93). In the final, the girls were in a competitive pack for fourth place during the first 800 meters, then sprinted through to earn their decisive third-place finish, 0.4 seconds from second place. Exeter’s girls had very strong firsts in their heat and semi-final. They led by almost four seconds in the heat and almost one second in the semi.
