Last Sunday, hundreds of students, employees and community members gathered on the Academy Building lawn to support progressive climate change legislation. PEA co-hosted the rally with leaders of Repower America and Project Laundry List. The rally honored the International Day of Climate Action, organized by 350.org.

According to scientists, 350 parts per million (PPM) in the world is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Currently, environmental levels closer to 390 (PPM) are pushing the Earth into a danger zone with too much carbon, resulting in calls for international treaties and critical, immediate action.

350.org states that 181 countries participated last weekend in “the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet’s history. At over 5,200 events around the world, people gathered to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis.”

Exeter’s rally included 2 guest speakers:

David Anderson, New Hampshire Seacoast organizer for Repower New Hampshire, a division of Repower America that collectively advocates for the investment in energy efficiency, clean renewable energy sources, a unified smart energy national grid and clean car technology.

Alexander Lee ’93, founder and executive director of Project Laundry List, an organization working to make air-drying and cold-water washing laundry an acceptable, desirable, and simple and effective way to save energy; thus reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions that are contributing to a warming planet.

350.org states on its website that over 19,000 photos of support for climate change legislation have been submitted. Exeter proudly sent a photo of its signature red lion, formed with red-clad human supporters of the environmental cause.
