The Faculty
EMI is committed to helping improve mathematics instruction in the classroom for students in urban school districts. If you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact either the director of the program or the foundation's primary consultant at the addresses and phone numbers listed below.
Eric Bergofsky – Eric is originally from Baltimore, MD and earned both a Bachelor of Engineering Science and a Master in Education at Johns Hopkins University. He also earned an M.S.T. from the University of New Hampshire. He has been teaching high school mathematics since 1973 and joined the Exeter faculty in 1977 a teacher, coach, and dorm advisor. Eric was the Director of the Anja S. Greer Conference on Secondary School Mathematics, Science, and Technology from 1986-1992 and created the Exeter Mathematics Institute program in 1992. He has been the Director of EMI since its inception. Eric has a particular interest in using technology in the mathematics classroom and co-authored the book Exploring Algebra with The Geometer's Sketchpad- published by Key Curriculum Press. Eric has recently added the responsibilities of Director of Studies to his classroom teaching and his role as the head Boy's Varsity Lacrosse Coach.
Dale Braile – Dale earned her undergraduate degree as a math major at Williams College and went on to earn a masters degree from Dartmouth College. Dale has the distinction of being one of the few teachers to have ever taught at both Phillips Academy (Andover) and Phillips Exeter Academy, two of the premier secondary schools in the world. Dale was first appointed to the faculty at Exeter in 1987, and she has been a mathematics instructor, a dormitory head, and a girl's cross country coach during her illustrious and busy career. She is the most recently appointed member of the EMI faculty and has been a tremendous addition to our teaching team.
Bill Campbell – Bill graduated from Lafayette College with a Bachelor's degree and went on to earn his Master's degree at Columbia University. Bill came to Exeter in 1973 as an Instructor in Mathematics after serving as both a teacher and an administrator at Rye Country Day School in New York. At Exeter, Bill coached wrestling and served as a long term dorm head and advisor. Bill has been a prolific writer of algebra problems for many years and he has conceived and written many of the hands-on activities used in our EMI courses. Bill has been teaching in the EMI program since its inception in 1992. He frequently shares his more than 40 years of classroom experience by speaking at math conferences all over the country.
Gwyn Coogan – Gwyn is a Phillips Exeter Academy graduate of the class of 1983, and went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from Smith College where she also distinguished herself as the top Division III distance runner in the country. Gwyn went on to earn her PhD in mathematics from the University of Colorado in Boulder where she continued her running success. Gwyn has the rare distinction of being a PhD mathematician and an Olympic 10,000 meter runner who competed in the 1992 Olympic Games as a member of the United States Olympic Team. Not surprisingly, Gwyn is the head coach of the Girl's Varsity Cross Country team at Exeter in addition to her roles as dormitory head and mathematics instructor.
Tony Greene – Tony is originally from Boston, Massachusetts which explains his undying love and loyalty for the Boston Red Sox. Tony earned his B.A. from Principia College in Saint Luis, MO, and subsequently three other advanced degrees from Boston State College, Bowdoin College, and Harvard University. Prior to coming to Exeter in 1989, Tony taught high school mathematics for over twenty years in public schools near Boston. This wealth of experience teaching in public schools gives Tony a special perspective that he brings to his Exeter Mathematic Institute teaching. Tony is a master teacher in the classroom, a former dormitory head and advisor, the former head boy's squash coach, and the current head varsity coach of the Boy's Varsity Tennis team.
Dave Arnold – Dave earned his B.A. from Middlebury College in Vermont, his M.A. from Rutgers University, and his PhD. from the University of Toronto. By virtue of his appointment to the Exeter faculty in 1967, Dave is considered the most senior Exeter teacher in our group. This title does not go unchallenged by his good friend Bill Campbell who likes to remind Dave that Bill is older and has also been teaching longer. Dave's forty years of teaching at Phillips Exeter Academy has brought him many awards and distinctions, including being named the first holder of the John E. and Mary E. Smith memorial Chair in Mathematics. Dave has been the Chair of the Mathematics Department, the Director of Studies, a head varsity tennis coach, a dormitory head advisor, and a member of more committees then he wants to remember. Dave is known for his sense of humor and outgoing personality. He is passionate about many things, among them are his teaching of mathematics, the programming of his TI calculator, and the New England Patriots.
Joe Wolfson – Like his friend and colleague Eric Bergofsky, Joe is also a native of Baltimore, MD and a graduate of Johns Hopkins University. Despite this, Joe and Eric's paths did not cross until Joe came to Exeter in 1987. Joe earned his M.S. degree from the University of Chicago and taught many years at the Sidwell Friends School in Bethesda, MD before coming to Exeter. Joe is a former chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Exeter and one of the driving forces that helped shape Exeter's current curriculum. His leadership, guidance, and hard work on the curriculum have been unmatched in the department. Joe has taken on many jobs at Exeter that include assistant lacrosse and volleyball coach, dorm advisor, head advisor to the yearbook, and many more. Always hungry to learn something new, Joe is currently studying Japanese.
Rick Parris – Rick was born and raised in Massachusetts and attended Tufts University for his undergraduate work. He then went on to one of the top graduate mathematics programs in the country and earned his PhD in mathematics from Princeton University. After a couple of different teaching stints at both the college and high school levels, Rick came to Phillips Exeter Academy in 1978 to start his illustrious career. It did not take long for Rick to establish a reputation as one of the most brilliant and able high school math instructors at Exeter, and indeed anywhere in the country. His national and international reputation has grown steadily through the years because of his incredible mathematical software that he makes available for free at his Peanut Software web site. Besides his outstanding work in the classroom, Rick has coached the Girls Cross Country team from their inception in 1978 to the present day, he has been a dorm head and advisor, and he has made uncountable other contributions to the life of Phillips Exeter Academy. Rick has been a member of the EMI faculty since the beginning in 1992.
